The capability to produce a 1/4' - 3/8' long spark prooves a good ignition system. Evinrude - the serial number on an Evinrude is located on the transom or mounting bracket. The only other thing that's want to go is the ignition system (coils age and crack), but if it was running recently, they must have been serviced already. Check the lower unit oil for water/milkyness to be sure.Good call on changing the impeller - yes it does have one. You see it all the time on 2-strokes, esp after a long run at low speed. The factory manuals definitely worth the extra money though.If that stuff leaking out of the engine smells like petrol at all, it's probably just unburnt fuel/oil finding it's way out. Here's a good deal: 1970 Parts and ServiceDon't worry about the 'Johnson' label. However, sometimes they come up on ebay used for a fraction of the price of new. The very best manual is the Factory one, but reprints of it are rather expensive. I dont' see any significant part changes until '74 (new piston design, 2 rings rather than 3) so I think it would be safe to use a 1970 exclusive manual even if we did get the year off by one or two.
