In the late 1980s, Smith achieved modest fame as a rapper under the name The Fresh Prince. Smith's portrayal of Richard Williams in King Richard (2021) was critically acclaimed, winning him the Academy Award, British Academy Film Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, Golden Globe Award and Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actor.
